Area Information

Maries County was organized in 1855 from Osage and Pulaski counties. It was named for the Big and Little Maries rivers. The Maries River, like the upper reaches of the Osage River, was once said to be called Le Marias de Cygnes or "Marsh of Swans." It has also been said that the Big and Little Maries rivers were named for 2 French girls and that the name is the plural of Marie. The word "Maries" also comes from the French marais, meaning marsh, lake or pond.

Hospitals and medical centers in the area include the Phelps County Regional Medical Center, St. Mary's Health Center and Capital Region Medical Center. There are plenty of recreational opportunities in the Meramec Region. If you like water, there are plenty of clear, meandering streams perfect for boating, floating, swimming and fishing - regardless of whether it's trout, bass, catfish or crappie that you prefer.
